Personal Style as Communication...hmm

Remember when you were younger and you would take those Cosom quizzes with your friends? Well, I did a bit of digging and found a few fun quiz links to identify your personal style. They are a bit silly, but fun nonetheless.

While I was looking for these fun little quizzes I stated thinking a bit more about the psychology of our fashion choices and what establishes our personal style. One interesting point that I didn’t think of at the time, but is so apparent, is that fashion is about communication.

How we dress, and the choices we make about what we buy, is very simply about what we want to communicate about ourselves. I find it interesting that some of the same items from the last blog that create our personal style, are also the items we want to communicate about ourselves.

It’s such a simple ideal, and I find it funny that I didn’t think of it before. Think about our personal values for example.

A friend of mine at work was telling me the other day about how Natalie Portman is a vegan, and because of this strong value, has started designing vegan shoes for Te Casan. Not only is she able to support her beliefs in doing this, she is also enabling others to follow through in their common values and commitments. In being able to do this and follow through on our values we are able to communicate volumes able who we are and where we want to go in life.

Think also about that friend of yours who never wears jeans, only the most professional of outfits at all times. What about your other friends? Like the one who always wears jeans and the other one who is a little ‘out there’… Are they just trying to communicate that they are laid back, creative, professional, independent?

So who are you? What are you trying to communicate in our personal style?
